Regular Season Info
Ages
BYH fields teams for Mites through Midgets. Please reference the birth year chart for appropriate ages/levels.
When
Travel hockey season runs from September through the end of February.
FEES
BYH makes every attempt to keep costs affordable for families. Due to rising costs of just about everything - we have raised fees to better align with our cost structure so we can continue to provide our players and families with the best possible hockey experience. All payments will be handled through crossbar and can be paid in monthly increments.
Financial Assistance
BYH offers a limited number of scholarships to families each year who may not otherwise be able to play hockey due to individual financial circumstance.
Applications are due by October 1.
Practices
Practice days and times vary depending on ice availability. All practices will be held at the Bloomington Ice Center - either the Olson or GMA rinks.
In a typical season teams practice 2-3 times a week. The number and length of practices vary by age group.
Off-Ice Training
BYH partners with the Training and Performance Center (TPC) to provide off-ice training for our 10U-18U players. Sessions are held 1-2 times per week and are included in your season fees.
Leagues and Games
BYH has teams participating in the following leagues:
- 8U: Chicago United Hockey League (CUHL)
- 10U - 18U: Northern Illinois Hockey League (NIHL)
- 12U: Central States Development Hockey League (CSDHL)
BYH Teams participating in the CUHL and NIHL leagues average 25-30 games per season with games being played in the Chicago metro area as well as on our home ice in Bloomington.
BYH Teams participating in the CSDHL league average 25-30 games per season with games being played in Illinois and the surrounding states.
Tournaments
Regular season fees include funds to participate in tournaments throughout the season.
- 8U: Includes 1 tournament
- 10U-18U: Includes 2 tournaments
Individual teams may decide to attend additional tournaments which would be an added expense.
UNIFORMS
Club jerseys are required and may be purchased through the team store. More information will be sent following tryouts.

Birth Years for 2024-2025 Season:
Mite 8U: 2016, 2017
Squirt 10U: 2014, 2015
Peewee 12U: 2012, 2013
Bantam 14U: 2010, 2011
Midget 16U: 2008, 2009
Midget 18U: 2006, 2007
Step 1 - Make sure your player has a current USA Hockey Registration for 2024-2025 season. A current USA Hockey Registration number is REQUIRED to register with Thunder Hockey.
Step 2 - Register your player with Bloomington Youth Hockey below.
Tryout Fees -
8U: $130 with a $100 credit being applied to your account when you accept a team offer. If your child does not receive an offer after tryouts you will be refunded this $100.
10U/12U/14U/16U/18U: $200 with a $140 credit being applied to your account when you accept a team offer. If your child does not receive an offer after tryouts you will be refunded this $140.
